With strong financial backing and a growing presence in Japan, the company is expanding its local trading capabilities.
They are now seeking an experienced Power Trader to join their Tokyo-based team and play a key role in speculative trading and fuel hedging activities.
Role Overview
We are looking for a sharp and analytical Power Trader to join our client’s dynamic trading desk in Japan. The successful candidate will focus on generating profit through speculative power trading, supporting fuel hedging, and assisting deal structuring in coordination with the origination and commercial teams.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of Japan’s most exciting energy trading environments, leveraging global best practices and cross-functional collaboration across international offices.
Responsibilities:
* Develop and execute proprietary trading strategies to optimise market opportunities.
* Actively manage hedge books and monitor exposure and risk positions.
* Conduct market analysis, including supply/demand dynamics, competitor activity, and price trends.
* Support deal structuring and pricing for both power and fuel transactions, collaborating with origination and C&I teams.
* Participate in fuel hedging with international desks in Singapore and London.
* Manage physical operations, including nominations, commodity logistics, settlements, and exchange-based transactions.
* Enhance and maintain power market models and collaborate with analysts to expand forecasting and analytics tools.
* Represent the trading desk in system enhancement projects and internal stakeholder communications.
* Foster collaboration with international teams and align with global trading strategies and frameworks.
Requirements:
* Over 5 years of energy trading experience, ideally in power or commodity markets.
* Bachelor’s degree in a STEM or financial discipline (e.g. Engineering, Finance, Economics).
* Strong analytical mindset and ability to interpret complex data and regulatory environments.
* Experience with pricing models, market forecasting, and trading strategy development.
* Demonstrated success working within multinational or cross-functional teams.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to work both independently and collaboratively.
* Business fluency in either English or Japanese (bilingual proficiency is a plus).
* Self-starter with a proactive attitude, strong follow-through, and high attention to detail.
Preferred (but not required):
* Proficiency in Python, SQL, or Databricks.
* Familiarity with Japan’s evolving electricity market structure and regulatory changes.
* Experience supporting mid- or back-office trading operations.
Location: Tokyo, Japan (no current relocation required)
